The Democratic Party won an overwhelming victory in the three major elections in the United States held on Tuesday night.

NBC News predicts that the winners include Zoran Mamdani, a Muslim and self-proclaimed democratic socialist who will be the next mayor of New York.

In New Jersey, Mikie Sherrill is expected to become the next governor.

And in Virginia, NBC News predicted that Abigail Spanberger would become the state’s first female governor, and fellow Democrat Jay Jones would defeat incumbent Republican Attorney General Jason Miyares.

In California, voters approved Proposition 50. This is a constitutional amendment that would allow the state to use new maps for congressional districts that favor Democrats.

In Pennsylvania, voters retained three incumbent Democrats on the state Supreme Court, preserving the party’s 5-2 majority, according to NBC News.

Even before all races were called, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., touted the results as a sharp rebuke to Republican President Donald Trump.

Trump said in a social media post that anonymous “pollers” concluded that Republicans lost on Tuesday because Trump was not on the ballot and because the federal government shutdown that began Oct. 1 continues.

Schumer refused to endorse Mamdani before Election Day, but said in a statement: “Tonight’s results are a repudiation of Trump’s policies.”

“The brutality, chaos, and greed that characterize MAGA radicalism and drive up its costs have been categorically rejected by the American people,” Schumer said.

“It was a good night for Democrats and for our fight to lower costs, improve health care and deliver a better future for American families,” Schumer said.

“If the Republican Party wants to continue blindly following Donald Trump and descend into chaos, let them do so,” Schumer said. “The rest of America is moving forward.”

Jones, the projected winner of the Virginia attorney general race, was not seen as a betting favorite heading into the night, unlike other Democrats who won in landslides.

Jones’ campaign fortunes were in serious jeopardy in October following the revelation of text messages he sent in 2022 showing he fantasized about shooting then-Republican state House Speaker Todd Gilbert.
