A federal judge in Texas dismissed the Texas criminal case Thursday at the request of the Justice Department. boeing Despite expressing skepticism about the wisdom of dropping charges over two 737 Max crashes.
Some families of the crash victims strongly opposed the Justice Department’s move in May to ask Judge Reed O’Connor in U.S. District Court in Fort Worth to dismiss the case.
A total of 346 people died in the two accidents. The first crash of Lion Air Flight 610 in Indonesia occurred in late October 2018, and the second crash of Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 occurred almost five months later in March 2019.
In January 2021, the Department of Justice filed criminal charges against Boeing for conspiracy to defraud the United States after the company allegedly obstructed the Federal Aviation Administration’s evaluation of the Max’s maneuverability enhancement system.
