Pinterest experiments with new AI-powered personalized boards

Pinterest on Monday announced new AI-powered upgrades to its boards to make them more personalized for users. These features include “Styled for you,” an AI-driven collage that helps users create outfits from saved fashion pins, and “Boards made for you,” a personalized AI-curated board.

“Styled for you” collage allows users to combine different clothes and accessories to create new outfits tailored to their personal style preferences. By tapping on an item in the collage, users can swipe through AI-recommended saved pins to combine and match.

Pinterest is also testing “Boards made for you,” a selection of personalized boards that combine editor opinions and AI-powered suggestions. These boards feature trending styles, weekly outfit inspiration, and shoppable content that appear in users’ home feeds and inboxes.

The company is initially experimenting with AI capabilities in the U.S. and Canada. We plan to begin rolling it out in the coming months.

According to the company, the purpose of these AI features is to evolve Pinterest boards from just an organizational tool to a more personalized way to explore, shop, and find outfit inspiration. This effort aligns with Pinterest’s goal of positioning itself as an “AI-enabled shopping assistant,” as hinted by its CEO during the company’s second-quarter earnings call. Pinterest already integrates AI in a variety of ways, including AI-driven recommendations and visual search.

However, while platforms are introducing more AI capabilities, they are also trying to remove AI-generated content from their platforms. In April, the company announced plans to label AI-generated and AI-corrected images. We’ve also introduced controls that allow users to reduce the number of AI-generated pins they see in their feed.

In addition to new AI experiments, we’ve added a new tab to categorize your Pins, which you can access by viewing your board from your user profile. These updates will be rolled out globally in the coming months.

One of the new tabs is called “Make It Yours,” which recommends fashion products and home decor products based on pins that users have saved. The More Ideas tab suggests related Pins across categories like beauty, recipes, art, and more. Finally, the “All Saves” tab allows users to easily find all their previously saved Pins.
