Google Maps is adding new AI features such as Builder Agent and MCP Server (a tool that connects the AI Assistant to Google Maps technical documentation) to help developers and users create interactive projects using Maps data and code. The company said it is using Gemini models across the board to enhance these features.

Among these new tools, Builder Agent is a tool that, like many other coding tools, allows you to write a text description of the type of interactive map-based prototype you want to build and then create it. For example, you can type “Create a street view tour of your city,” “Create a map that visualizes real-time weather in your area,” or “Create a list of pet-friendly hotels in your city.”

Once the code is generated, you can export it, use your own API key to test the preview project, and modify the project in Firebase Studio if needed.

The same tool also has a styling agent that allows users to create customized maps that match specific style formats and themes. This helps brands create maps with specific color coding.

Google already provides the foundation for map data through its Gemini API. The company is now introducing a similar feature called Grounding Lite. This will allow developers to ground their own AI models using Model Context Protocol (MCP), a standard that allows AI assistants to connect to external data sources.

This feature allows an AI assistant to answer questions like “How far is the nearest grocery store?” The company also ships Contextual View, a low-code Google Maps component that can provide users with a visual understanding of questions like these. This feature allows you to display a list, map view, or 3D display as your answer.

Google is also adding MCP Server, a code assistant toolkit that connects with Google Maps documents. Developers can use this connection to get answers about how to use Google Maps APIs and data. Last month, the company released an extension to its Gemini command line tool that gives developers access to map data.

The company is also adding more Gemini-powered features to consumer-facing maps. Last week, users were able to use Gemini for hands-free navigation with Maps. For users in India, Google has added incident alerts and speed limit data to the Maps app in select regions.
