Google Photos’ latest feature lets you meme yourself

Google Photos now lets you create memes using your own images. Google on Thursday introduced a new AI-powered generation feature called “Me Meme.” This will allow you to generate meme images by combining photo templates with your own images.

The new feature, which will be available to US-based users first, was originally discovered during development last October by the blog Android Authority. This was officially announced by Google on Thursday via its Photo Community site.

Google says the feature is experimental, so the resulting image “may not be an exact match to the original photo.” For best results, we recommend uploading a bright, focused, front-facing photo.

This addition is intended to provide a fun way to explore photos and try out Google’s Gemini AI technology, specifically Nano Banana. Google’s popular AI image model powers other AI features in the Google Photos app, including the ability to recreate images in new styles like cartoons and paintings.

All things considered, it’s a pretty unserious addition, but this kind of feature helps remind users to go back to the Photos app whenever they want to try out an AI tool instead of going to a competitor’s product.

Additionally, users tend to be drawn to the ability to see themselves in AI editing, as OpenAI found with the successful launch of its Sora app that allows users to create AI videos of themselves and their friends.

“Me Meme” hasn’t been fully rolled out, so you may not see it in the updated Google Photos app yet. Google says if it’s available, it will appear under the Create tab. A Google representative told TechCrunch that the feature will roll out to iOS and Android users in the US over the “coming weeks.”

To use this feature, choose a template or upload your own, then tap Add Photo and Generate. Google says more templates will be added over time. After the AI creates the image, you can save the photo, share it on other platforms, or tap Regenerate to recreate the image again.
