Anthropic’s Super Bowl ad that mocks AI in advertising helped push Claude’s app into the top 10

Anthropic’s Super Bowl ad, which features a darkly comedic scenario in which people seeking advice from a chatbot are directed to a “cougar” dating site and height-enhancing insoles, has been successful. Since then, Anthropic’s AI chatbot Claude has moved up from number 41 to become a top 10 app in the US App Store. As of Friday, Claude was in seventh place, its highest ranking ever, showing that its “no ads” pitch is resonating with users.

Claude’s U.S. downloads reached an estimated total of 148,000 between Sunday and Tuesday on both iOS and Android, according to new data from market intelligence provider Appfigures. This is the latest data available. That’s a 32% increase from the three-day period Thursday through Saturday, when downloads totaled about 112,000.

Claude’s average daily downloads from Sunday to Tuesday were 49,200, an increase of 32% compared to the typical Sunday to Tuesday average of 37,400 downloads.

This number suggests that Anthropic’s Super Bowl commercial, coupled with the recent release of Anthropic’s new Opus 4.6 model, helped draw attention to the key differentiators between Claude’s app and ChatGPT. The latter rolled out ads to free users this week, just as Anthropic’s ad warned.

As a result, Claude’s app is gaining more attention than when it first appeared on mobile.

The consumer-focused AI app arrived on iOS in May 2024 to a rather lukewarm reception. ChatGPT hit the market on mobile devices and reached nearly 500,000 installs in the first five days. By comparison, Claude only achieved a total of 157,000 downloads worldwide in its first week and failed to reach a rank higher than #55 in the US App Store.

Globally, Claude also made some gains last week. Claude’s worldwide downloads on both the App Store and Google Play were up 15% from Sunday to Tuesday compared to last Thursday to Saturday. However, Appfigures noted that this is less than half the increase seen in the US.
