Spotify rolls out AI-powered prompt playlists to UK and other markets

After first testing its AI-powered “prompt playlists” feature in New Zealand and recently launching it in the U.S. and Canada, Spotify announced Monday that it will be rolling out the tool to premium subscribers in the U.K., Ireland, Australia and Sweden.

The Prompted Playlist feature allows users to create custom playlists by simply describing in their own words what they want to hear. Instead of searching for individual songs or artists, users can describe the mood, scenario, or inspiration they want, and Spotify will take care of the rest.

To access this feature, users tap Create, select Prompt Playlist, and enter a prompt in English. This feature is designed to interpret themes such as mood, aesthetics, and even memories. Prompts can be as broad or specific as the user wants, such as referencing musical eras, genres, activities, lyrics, instruments, or requesting playlists inspired by TV shows, movies, or personal milestones. At a prompt, users can also specify whether the playlist should include mostly new music or just music from their library.

Once your prompt is submitted, Spotify’s AI will generate a playlist customized to your request. The system utilizes the user’s listening history and incorporates current music and cultural trends. Additionally, each song comes with a short description that provides insight into why the song was chosen for that particular playlist.

Users can adjust their playlists by adjusting prompts or starting over. If you have ever-evolving music tastes, you can schedule your playlist to update automatically on a daily or weekly basis.

Since this is still in beta, Spotify said that changes may be made in response to feedback, and that there are currently usage restrictions in place. Some users report reaching the limit after about 20-30 prompts.

Spotify recently expanded its AI capabilities across its platform, including Page Match, which allows users to scan a physical book page and jump to the corresponding position in an audiobook, and About the Song. The platform has also updated its lyrics feature, offering global translation and offline access. Last week, SeatGeek partnered with Spotify to make it easier for listeners to find concert ticket links and upcoming tour dates on artist pages within the app.

Internally, the company is implementing AI across its workflows, with co-CEO Gustav Söderström saying earlier this month that Spotify’s best developers haven’t written a single line of code since December thanks to AI.

Spotify is also expanding its audiobook business by moving into selling physical books. Soon, users in the US and UK will be able to purchase physical copies directly from the app.
