Google Photos uses AI to bring ‘Clueless’ iconic closet to life

Google Photos announced new AI-powered features on Wednesday. This turns your clothing photos into a digital closet where you can create new outfit ideas and virtually try on pieces. Yes, this idea is clearly inspired by Cher’s iconic virtual wardrobe from the movie Clueless. There, Cher could scroll through different ensembles when deciding what to wear.

Google says the new feature leverages AI technology to automatically create a copy of your wardrobe based on the clothing in your Google Photos library. From the app, you can filter items by categories such as tops, bottoms, and jewelry, and mix and match them to create different outfits.

The idea of a digital closet in “Clueless” was meant to highlight Cher’s privileged life. As a result, the fashion industry and various startups have long sought to recreate the feeling of creating an outfit with ease. Google is betting that AI technology will give everyone access to similar tools, and that as AI advances, the tools will likely improve.

You can share these outfit ideas with friends or save them to your digital moodboard to save ideas for different occasions such as travel, events, dates, work, and more.

Additionally, we’re adding the ability to virtually try on items to preview how they look.

The feature hasn’t been rolled out yet, but Google says it will roll out to Google Photos on Android later this summer, followed by iOS in Collections. It competes with existing apps such as Acloset, Combine, Pureple, Wearing, and Alta.

The company didn’t go into detail about how the AI works, but said it recognizes clothing and accessories in your library and creates individual snapshots. Sure, AI might be able to extract the image from a bright full-body photo, but I think you’ll get better results if you take the time to photograph your outfit yourself, like Cher did.
