The organization that organizes the Academy Awards announced new Oscar rules on Friday, including several rules addressing the use of generative artificial intelligence.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences said only performances “credited to the film’s legal fees and clearly performed by a human being with consent” will be eligible for an Academy Award. Similarly, the Academy said a screenplay must be “written by a human” to qualify.

The academy also said it had the right to request more information about the film’s use of AI and “human original authorship.”

These rule changes come as an independent film using an AI-generated version of Val Kilmer is in production, AI “actress” Tilly Norwood continues to make headlines, and at least a few filmmakers declare total despair over the new video model. AI was also one of the major sticking points for actors and writers fighting back in 2023.

Outside of Hollywood, at least one novel has been pulled from publication by its publisher because of its apparent use of AI, and other writers’ organizations have declared that the use of AI makes their works ineligible for awards.
