OpenAI makes ChatGPT Health available to all users in the US

OpenAI today announced that ChatGPT Health, a feature that helps users with health-related questions, will be available to all U.S.-based users age 18 and older across all plans. The announcement came a day after a Florida-based pastor sued the company for making a near-fatal suggestion to keep him from seeing a doctor.

The company began testing the feature in early January through a dedicated hub, allowing users to integrate data from other services with personal information from services such as Apple Health, Function, and MyFitnessPal.

At the time, OpenAI said its users were making 230 million health-related queries each week. That number has now reached 300 million.

Users can also integrate medical records from hospital systems such as Epic and Oracle Health, as well as medical platforms such as One Medical and Function Health.

OpenAI previously stated that users should use Health Hub for health-related queries. Now, in the health section of every query, you can choose to derive insights from connected information. The company said that during testing, it was observed that 70% of health-related queries were made outside of the dedicated hub. This new feature allows users to use their health information to get information about food and allergies in general chats.

The company noted that its models are making progress in answering health-related questions. The company noted that its latest release’s smallest model, GPT 5.6-Luna, outperformed GPT 5.5 in the HealthBench evaluation, an open-source benchmark developed by the company to evaluate large-scale language models (LLMs) for health queries. OpenAI said it does not use any user data to train its models and works with doctors to improve its models for health-related queries.

Despite these performance improvements, the company claims in its terms that its service is “not intended to be used to diagnose or treat any health condition.” The company cited these provisions in response to the lawsuit, and also told the New York Times that it is working on making health or medical-related answers safer. OpenAI said that with its latest developments, it wants people to review information and make medical decisions based on expert advice.

Several studies have highlighted that AI bots cannot be trusted for medical advice. But that hasn’t deterred companies like Anthropic and Google from launching health-related AI capabilities.

This week, ChatGPT’s health features are rolling out to US users logged in with Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans on the web and iOS.
