After OpenAI recently admitted that one of its models had compromised the systems of AI platform Hugging Face, Hugging Face CEO Clem DeLang posted on X that he was flying to San Francisco to “have a little chat with that ‘rogue agent.'”

Then, in a follow-up post on Saturday, Delangue outlined what he wanted from OpenAI. He called for “radical transparency” and called on OpenAI to “publish the traces of the ‘rogue’ agents so that the entire research community can investigate what happened.”

He also wants “more capabilities for defenders,” asking OpenAI to inject $100 million worth of computing power “so that the Hugging Face community can build strong cyber defenses with the best open and closed models.”

DeLang added: “The first cyberattack by an autonomous agent is an unprecedented event. It requires an unprecedented response!”

Despite the autonomous nature of the attack, cybersecurity experts also suggested that human error could have been the culprit, namely OpenAI’s apparent failure to properly configure a test environment that should have been completely isolated.
