OpenAI launches ChatGPT desktop app for Linux

ChatGPT is on desktops around the world, but there’s one place it’s missing. It’s the Linux community. Certain sectors of the open source developer community are calling for OpenAI’s chatbots to be brought to their leadership.

As of this week, OpenAI has corrected this oversight and released a dedicated ChatGPT app for Linux.

“Linux is one of the most requested platforms for desktop apps, and this release extends ChatGPT and Codex to all major desktop operating systems,” the company said on Tuesday.

This new app, released in preview, allows Linux users to use ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, and Codex on a variety of distributions. As of Tuesday, the release is worldwide.

OpenAI says supported distributions include desktop versions of Ubuntu 24.04 and 26.04 LTS, Debian 13, and Fedora 43 and 44. While the entire Linux community is made up of hundreds of distributions, the one OpenAI has chosen here will serve as a base for a variety of “downstream” desktop distributions or “flavors” and, as a result, should also be compatible with OpenAI’s apps.

OpenAI is a bit behind Anthropic, which released its Claude desktop app for Linux about a month ago. Anthropic’s apps are available for Ubuntu 22.04 and later and Debian 12 and later.
