Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei seems to be everywhere this weekend. He was mocked on Saturday Night Live’s season premiere and is scheduled to have dinner with President Donald Trump at the White House tonight.
Axios first broke the news of Amodei’s dinner plans, which TechCrunch later confirmed with a source familiar with his plans.
This will be the first one-on-one meeting between the two men, who have recently found themselves on opposite sides of the debate over AI safety. Mr. Amodei announced plans to slow down (or at least proceed more cautiously with) AI development, while Mr. Trump claimed, without evidence, that the AI backlash was a Democratic hoax. He also wants to rebrand the technology as “superintelligence.”
Even before the current ups and downs, Amodei and Anthropic must have had a rocky relationship with the Trump administration. Earlier this year, the Pentagon designated Anthropic as a supply chain risk after the company tried to put guardrails on the use of its technology (Anthropic is challenging the designation in court), but other administration officials were more friendly.
