OpenAI has been a close partner of Microsoft since the beginning, but AI Labs is increasingly pursuing the company’s flagship workplace software with new features that closely resemble office software suites like Microsoft’s.
At its Dev Day developer conference in San Francisco on Tuesday, OpenAI announced several new ChatGPT features designed for office workers.
Most notably, OpenAI has launched a feature called Space, a shared workspace within ChatGPT. This feature allows colleagues to collaborate on a variety of work tasks with chatbots and our own Dot, OpenAI’s newly launched AI agent persona that can perform tasks on your behalf.
“All your pages and files live together in Space as if they were in a drive,” CEO Sam Altman said in a presentation Tuesday. “But the space feels alive.” Altman said users can give page-specific instructions, such as checking team channels and refreshing the page with what they find.
OpenAI also announced Pages, a companion word processor that the company describes as “a new type of document built for human-agent collaboration.” This seems to be OpenAI’s answer to Google Docs and Microsoft Word. OpenAI says users can “write, explore, generate graphs, create images, or visualize information” within it.
OpenAI has also started its answer to PowerPoint with something called Collaborative Slides. You can create these slides simply by speaking within ChatGPT. Once generated, multiple workers and agents can collaborate within it and can leave comments and edit it.
While OpenAI is encroaching on Microsoft’s territory, software companies like Microsoft and Salesforce are working hard to become like OpenAI. Over the past year, both companies have released a number of AI products as the software industry seeks to adapt to the changing landscape.
