Facebook gives users more control over algorithm

Facebook is a modern social media platform that gives users more control over the algorithms that determine what appears in their feeds.

On Tuesday, Meta announced the release of a new AI-powered feature called Your Algorithm. This feature was first launched on Instagram. This new tool allows Facebook users to influence the content they see in their feed and Reels by describing their preferences in their own words using natural language. Users can now communicate directly with the platform about the topics and content they more or less want to see, rather than relying entirely on automated recommendations.

According to Meta, this feature is designed to make content recommendations more relevant. Users can adjust their preferences and interact with the algorithms that rank and recommend posts, and changes are reflected in recommendations in real time.

The company also updated Facebook’s three-point menu to make it easier for users to manage their content preferences directly from individual posts. By opening the menu, users can access “Your Algorithms” and select “Interesting” or “Not Interesting” options to indicate whether certain content suits their tastes or not.

Mehta said the platform could ask users follow-up questions to better understand what they like or dislike, allowing them to provide more detailed feedback. Users can describe more or less what they want to see, allowing Facebook to narrow down recommendations based on users’ answers.

The introduction of “Your Algorithm” reflects Meta’s broader commitment to increasing influence over people’s social media experiences as AI increasingly shapes content discovery. The move marks a shift away from the traditional recommendation systems that have shaped the social media experience for years, moving the platform closer to a streaming service where users can personalize recommendations based on their interests and preferences.

The launch also builds on existing personalization efforts across Meta’s other platforms. Instagram introduced Your Algorithm in June and expanded customization options across Feed and Explorer after first rolling out the feature for Reels in December 2025.

Threads also introduced a unique companion feature called “Dear Algo” that allows users to influence the content they recommend.
