OpenAI acquires startup Orchestra Bio to strengthen biotech business

OpenAI announced on its website Tuesday that it has acquired a four-year-old AI biotech software startup called Orchestra Bio. Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but the startup has reportedly raised about $20 million in 2025 from backers including Andreessen Horowitz, Atria, and 8VC.

Orchestra creates AI agents that help biotech companies manage the details of drug discovery operations, from tracking financials to resolving clinical trial scheduling issues.

OpenAI said it will add Orchestra’s team and technology to work on Rosalind, an AI model for life sciences research, and the Rosalind Workbench tool, a related harness aimed at helping researchers plan experiments and analyze results. OpenAI has already secured big-name companies such as Moderna and Novo Nordisk as customers for Rosalind.

This acquisition is a prime example of how the biggest AI labs (i.e. OpenAI and Anthropic) are building more software for the biggest industries like pharmaceuticals. In the startup world, there’s always the fear that at any moment a research lab will come out with a new feature and become a competitor. In this case, the orchestra is not gaining momentum, but being absorbed.
