Amulya Vishwanath, ex-Nvidia turned VC: “Physical AI is in the LEGO era”

It’s the moment everyone has been waiting for — the ChatGPT moment of robotics, Amulya Vishwanath explained to TechCrunch’s Equity.

She is the founder and managing partner of Techable Ventures, a VC firm focused on physical AI, which she founded after spending nearly seven years as a product marketer at Nvidia. Prior to that, he was a digital signal processing engineer at Interconnect Systems, which was later acquired by electronics manufacturer Molex, in the same role at a company later acquired by Intel.

She stopped by Equity to talk about the future of physical AI, one of the industry’s newest buzzwords.

“A lot of companies and experts are talking about the ChatGPT moment in robotics,” she said, adding that the industry is now in rather a “Lego era.”

“There is a lot of foundational software and building blocks in robotics that are being re-examined as we speak, and that is critical to scaling innovation,” she continued.

Right now, people are building the foundations for things like robotic hands and actuators that could one day come together to assemble big-ticket items. It’s like a bunch of Legos coming together. General purpose and special purpose robots are still being built, and eventually they will get better and more advanced as people continue to build them.

“We’ve been doing this in the internet age,” she said. “We did things like this a long time ago during the industrial revolution. I think it’s only a matter of time before things are right.”

“Talent is also going to be very important,” she continued, adding elsewhere at the conference that talent remains a key factor defining the U.S. market. She said this is one of her company’s “moats,” allowing it to stay competitive by connecting founders with top talent at a time when so much talent is leaving for big companies like Anthropic and Nvidia. She pointed out that after many years working in this field, she has built a strong network to support founders.

“This makes it very easy for me to empower founders and be the first call,” she said.
