President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said Ukraine is receiving more U.S.-made Patriot air defense systems to counter Russian attacks.

The sophisticated Patriot system is the most effective weapon against Russian missiles used to kill thousands of people in Russia’s war against Ukraine, which began about four years ago.

President Zelenskiy had implored Western partners to provide more of these systems, but production limits and the need to maintain stockpiles have delayed delivery.

“More patriots are currently in Ukraine and are starting operations,” President Zelensky posted on social media late Sunday. “Of course, we need more systems to protect major infrastructure facilities and cities across the state.”

NATO is coordinating regular deliveries of large arms packages to Ukraine, and the European ally and Canada are purchasing much of their equipment from the United States, which has available military supplies and larger inventories of more effective weapons.

The Trump administration has not provided arms to Ukraine as readily as his predecessor, Joe Biden.

One man was killed and five family members, including two children, were injured in a late-night attack by a Russian drone in the Sumy region of northeastern Ukraine. Two women were also injured in another Soumi attack.

Starting Monday and overnight, Russia launched 12 missiles of various types and 138 attack and decoy drones, according to the Ukrainian Air Force.

“The Russians cynically targeted people. They deliberately targeted them at night while they were sleeping,” regional chief Ole Frikhorov wrote on Telegram following the attack.

Vladislav Khayvanenko, head of the central Dnipro region, said a Russian missile caused a fire at a business in the central Dnipro region, injuring one man.

Russia has also targeted Ukraine’s energy supplies, denying civilians heating and water supplies in the winter, and disrupting industrial production of Ukraine’s newly developed drones and missiles.

The drone attacked energy infrastructure in the southern Mykolaiv region.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian forces attacked Russia’s Saratov oil refinery overnight, setting it on fire, according to the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. This is Ukraine’s fourth attack on the Saratov facility in about seven weeks.

The refinery is about 500 kilometers (300 miles) from the border and can process millions of tonnes of oil a year.

Ukraine also announced that it had attacked Russian military logistics facilities in the occupied Luhansk region.

President Zelensky claimed last week that long-range attacks on Russian oil refineries had reduced Moscow’s oil refining capacity by 20%.

Russia claimed on Monday that its forces had advanced on the Ukrainian city of Pokrovsk, a transport and logistics hub that Russian forces have been seeking to capture for more than a year.

Russia’s Defense Ministry said its soldiers destroyed what it said was surrounding Ukrainian military positions near Pokrovsk’s train station and industrial area and entered the city’s Prigorodny region.
