The Prince of Wales and his son George volunteered with a homeless charity in London this week, but the trip was reminiscent of Prince William’s own upbringing, when he was introduced to a shelter by his mother Diana, Princess of Wales, at the same age.

On Tuesday morning, William and 12-year-old George visited The Passage, a British charity for the homeless in central London, to help prepare their annual Christmas lunch.

In a video posted on the Prince and Duchess of Wales’ official X account, Prince George can be seen donning an apron as he puts up Christmas decorations and helps prepare festive meals.

A statement posted alongside the video said of the father and son outing: “We are proud to join The Passage’s volunteers and staff in preparing Christmas lunch. We need an extra pair of help this year.”

William first visited The Passage with his late mother Diana when he was 11 years old. He says this was a pivotal moment and helped shape ongoing efforts to tackle homelessness, including the launch of the Homewards program, which provides funding to support homelessness initiatives across the UK.

Another X post features two side-by-side photos, one from this year’s visit and the other of Princess Diana and young William in a shelter in December 1993, paying homage to Princess Diana’s life as a humanitarian and a legacy that continues across generations.

In a documentary about homelessness released last year, William said of his first visit to the charity: “I’d never been to anything like that before and I was a little nervous about what to expect.”

“I remember playing chess and chatting and having fun conversations,” he added. “That’s when I realized there were other people out there who didn’t have the same life as you.”

During Tuesday’s visit, Prince George signed The Passage’s visitor list on the same page previously signed by his father and late grandmother, Princess Diana, according to palace officials.

The pair also spoke to people affected by homelessness and heard how the charity has supported them, officials said.

A Kensington Palace spokesperson said: “It was important to The Prince of Wales to share The Passage’s work with Prince George and spend time volunteering with the team.”

A spokesperson said the pair had “enjoyed meeting staff, volunteers and service users”.

“The dedication shown by organizations in the homelessness sector, not just at The Passage, but at Christmas and throughout the year, is invaluable,” they added.
