At least nine people were killed in a shooting at a high school and residential area in northeastern British Columbia, Canadian police said Tuesday.

Police responded to reports of a shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School around 1:20pm local time on Tuesday and found six people dead and dozens injured. The other person died while being taken to the hospital.

The suspect in the shooting was found dead from an “apparent self-inflicted wound,” police said.

Both victims were airlifted to hospital with serious or life-threatening injuries. Police said about 25 other people with non-life-threatening injuries were being treated at local medical centers.

Police said two more people were found dead at a residence believed to be related to the incident.

“Officers are conducting further searches of homes and properties to determine if anyone else may have been injured or otherwise connected to today’s events,” the statement said.

“We do not believe there is a known suspect or ongoing threat to the public,” police said in a statement. The emergency warning, which had asked people to evacuate to designated areas, was lifted at 5:45 p.m. local time.

Tumbler Ridge Middle School has 175 students in grades 7 through 12, according to the state website.

“Due to the tragic events that occurred today in the Tumbler Ridge community, Tumbler Ridge Middle School and Tumbler Ridge Elementary School will be closed for the remainder of this week,” a notice on the website reads.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
