It was an eventful weekend as the war between the US, Israel and Iran enters its sixth week. US President Donald Trump has issued another ultimatum to the Iranian government after a high-stakes mission to rescue American soldiers stranded in Iran after an Iranian airliner was shot down.
Meanwhile, strikes continue, the humanitarian crisis widens, and the global economy remains unstable. Here is the latest one.
What are the main headings?
President Trump’s deadline: President Trump appears to have set a new deadline for Iran to fully reopen the Strait of Hormuz. “Tuesday, 8pm ET,” he wrote after issuing a profane message in which he issued fresh threats to bomb key Iranian infrastructure, including power plants, if Tehran did not comply. Targeting critical civilian infrastructure could be considered a war crime. President Trump has repeatedly declared and then amended deadlines for opening the straits.
Tehran’s response: Iranian officials issued their own threats in response, saying the strait would remain closed until Iran received payment for war damages.
Daring rescue mission: A U.S. Air Force officer shot down over Iran evaded capture for more than a day by hiding alone and climbing through rugged terrain as a massive rescue effort unfolded, officials told CNN. The rescue involved hundreds of American military and intelligence personnel, including special operations forces and CIA operatives, who launched a deception operation to get rid of potential Iranian prisoners.
Trump press conference: President Trump said he would hold a press conference at the White House at 1 p.m. ET on Monday to tell reporters about the rescue effort. He also provided new details about the crew, who he said were “severely injured.”
Diplomatic efforts: Sources say that behind the scenes, Oman has held talks with Iran about the Strait of Hormuz, while Pakistan and Egypt have been working to maintain communication between Washington and Tehran.
Casualties in Lebanon: Israeli military attacks in Lebanon have killed at least 11 people, including a 4-year-old girl, according to local officials and media. As of Sunday, more than 1,460 people had died since the start of the war, according to the Lebanese Ministry of Health. Meanwhile, some far-right Israeli lawmakers say the military’s plan to destroy Lebanese border villages is not enough and are calling for Israel to draw a “new security border” and expel hundreds of thousands of Lebanese civilians living south of the planned line.
Strike in Israel: Israeli emergency workers are still searching for four missing people early Monday morning, hours after a missile struck a seven-story building in Haifa. Emergency workers told CNN that the airstrike damaged the building, affected several apartments and left some dead and injured trapped under the rubble. Separate footage shot by a CNN producer in Jerusalem early Monday showed the missile passing through the night sky.
Diplomats targeted: Iran-linked militias targeted U.S. diplomats and facilities in Iraq in two overnight attacks, a State Department spokesperson said, without specifying the exact location of the attacks.
