Why release the CNN Weather app?

We know you’re thinking you don’t need another weather app.

There are already too many apps, including your phone’s default apps, radar apps, and severe weather apps, that give you 47 data points before you even have your morning coffee.

The data is helpful, but very incomplete. Things change drastically without warning or explanation. You could get caught in the rain, fall prey to the hype, or worst of all, fail to notice extreme weather before it’s too late.

A good forecast allows you to know what will happen. A good weather app will help you understand the weather forecast, how confident you should be in it, and what to do with that information. Therefore, you only need one.

That’s what we hope to provide with our new iOS app CNN Weather. We started this service because the world needs clearer, calmer, and more humane weather guides.

Download the CNN weather app

This app has a large team of weather experts working for you, and our mission is simple: It’s about helping you make decisions the way we do every day. We offer a one-stop shop with not just the data, but the talent to explain it honestly, without hype or exaggeration.

This is especially important as weather becomes more volatile and more expensive, not just extreme storms. Weather patterns and seasons are changing. Early spring warmth and late frosts kill our plants. Heatwaves are frequent and sadly deadly.

You need to decide whether to delay driving, get the sump pump working again, or pay attention to school pick-up. With CNN Weather, you don’t have to scour other apps or websites for context.

A generational shift in media consumption is taking hold, creating a void in the weather ecosystem that is now being filled by YouTube, TikTok, and AI. As meteorologists, we are concerned. People are losing trusted experts when they need them most. The world of weather, a thriving ecosystem of atmospheric experts and communicators, needs to understand what happens next.

CNN Weather, launching today, is the first swipe at solving this problem. We don’t think the first version checks all the boxes, but it’s a good start.

The forecast is just beginning. We bring you expert coverage and the stories behind the weather. So you always know more than just the numbers. Sign up for our newsletter

If weather starts to become a problem in your area, we can cover you. Quick videos and short written updates from meteorologists will help you understand what’s happening and decide what to do. If the situation escalates, we will respond in real time so that you have access to expert guidance as the situation changes in real time.

The goal is to clarify when weather actually has (or could have) an impact. We don’t perform live every time it rains.

We are committed to being honest about our confidence and uncertainty in our forecasts, especially when forecasts are still changing. We want to help you understand what to do next, whether it’s to be extra careful, prepare for possible consequences, or simply go about your daily life.

We hope you will download the app. We welcome your comments and feedback. My email address is angela.fritz@cnn.com.

The forecast has only just begun, so I’m looking forward to seeing what happens next.
