The Norwegian Tourism Board has launched a tongue-in-cheek toilet campaign to show off Norway’s most beautiful toilets after US President Donald Trump slammed the Nordic nation as a “shithole country”.
President Trump made the scathing comments on the campaign trail, days before voters headed to the polls for the midterm elections.
He said Sunday that he welcomes immigrants to the U.S. from some countries, but not from Norway. “I didn’t win the Nobel Prize, so I don’t want anyone to come from Norway,” he said. “Norway has actually become a terrible country,” Trump later told the same rally.
Now Visit Norway is backing the label and asking, “Are these the best shitty houses in the world?” An online article introducing facilities available in the scenic Scandinavian country.
The tourism board highlighted the campaign on social media this week, posting several images and writing: “So, I hear all the noise about the ‘…homeland’…what can I say, we have some of the most beautiful and spectacular toilets in the world.”
Norway’s marketing campaign features photos and footage of some great facilities, with captions like, “Norway is making shitty houses great again. These toilets are worth a visit, whether you really have to go or not.”
Among the toilets in the spotlight is one at Stegastein Observation Deck in the Sognefjord region, which the tourism board said was named one of the world’s 10 best public toilets by Designcurial. Also highlighted is the wave-shaped Wredplassen on the Helgeland coast.
Described by the site as “architectural masterpieces”, the toilets featured include a golden toilet on Senja Island and a solar-powered toilet in the Sognefjord region.
The website promises “more to come” when it comes to toilets being built to impress, and concludes: “As you can see, Norway’s impressive portfolio of toilets is full of great examples of how something as boring as a toilet can become a tourist attraction.”
The US president also called Haiti, Libya, Somalia and Yemen “fucking house states.” But his attack on Norway appears to have stemmed from him missing out on the Nobel Peace Prize, which was awarded to South African human rights pioneer Navi Pillay earlier this month.
President Trump has been repeatedly reminded by Norwegians that the prize is awarded by the independent Nobel Committee, not the Norwegian government.
