Members of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) stand guard after the driver of a vehicle was shot in Minneapolis, Minnesota, U.S., January 7, 2026.

Tim Evans Reuter

Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in Minneapolis shot and killed a woman in a car Wednesday, federal officials said.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and another senior Homeland Security official have alleged that the woman who died engaged in “an act of domestic terrorism” in an intentional attempt to corner ICE agents.

But Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and the city’s police chief ridiculed the claims, calling them “bullsh*t” and “bullshit” respectively.

Video of the incident posted on social media shows the woman being told to get out of the truck, then attempting to drive away in the car that was blocking the truck, only to be shot dead by ICE agents within seconds.

Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said his department had secured a “crime scene” and the incident was being investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Investigation. O’Hara said the state department will investigate “whether there are any violations of state law.”

“Today, as ICE officers in Minneapolis were conducting a targeted operation, a mob began to intercept them, and one of the violent mobs used a vehicle as a weapon and attempted to run over and kill our law enforcement officers. This is an act of domestic terrorism,” Tricia McLaughlin, assistant secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, said in a post on X.

Video from the scene posted on social media shows ICE officers pulling up to a group of cars parked on a suburban street.

“Get that woman out of the neighborhood,” a woman can be seen saying from behind the camera.

According to the video, the ICE officers quickly got out of the truck and approached the vehicle blocking the road, saying, “Ma’am, get out of your car, get out of your car, get out of your damn car.”

The car then backed up slightly and began to drive off, at which point at least three shots were fired. It takes less than three seconds from the time the car reverses until the gunfire begins.

“Oh my god!” a woman screams in the video.

The car that was hit immediately went down the street and crashed into another car.

“Hey, what did you kill for?” a man shouts in the video.

Several Minnesota lawmakers called on ICE to withdraw from Minneapolis after the shooting.

Mayor Frey criticized ICE at a press conference, calling the allegations that the dead woman was trying to kill officers “atrocious.”

“I have a message for ICE: Get these guys out of Minneapolis,” Frey said.

“What they’re doing is causing confusion and mistrust. They’re tearing families apart,” Frey said.

“They are already trying to interpret this as an act of self-defense because they are sowing chaos on our streets and in this case, literally killing people,” the mayor said.

“I’ve seen my video, and I want to say it directly to you: This is a bull — this is an agent recklessly exercising his power, and as a result, someone died or was killed,” Frey said.

Speaking at the same press conference, Police Chief O’Hara said, “I personally saw footage of shots being fired as the car drove away.”

“All I can say is that the theory that this was done in self-defense is a garbage theory that is not true,” O’Hara said.

“We are following the news that an ICE agent reportedly shot and killed a legal supervisor in South Minneapolis,” Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minnesota, wrote in a post on X.

“ICE must stop terrorizing our communities and leave our cities,” Omar wrote.

“As soon as we have more information, we will share it. In the meantime, we ask the public to remain calm,” Minnesota Governor Tim Walz said in a tweet.
