President Trump raises global tariffs from 10% to 15%, “effective immediately”

President Donald Trump said Saturday that he would raise global tariffs from 10% to 15%, a day after the Supreme Court struck down his “reciprocal” tariffs.

President Trump said in a post on Truth Social that the new tariffs are “effective immediately.”

“As President of the United States, I will take effect immediately to increase the 10% global tariff on countries, many of which have been ‘striped’ from the United States for decades, without retaliation (until I came along!) to the fully permissible and legally tested level of 15%,” he wrote.

President Trump warned in a social media post Saturday that additional tariffs would be imposed.

“In the coming months, the Trump administration will determine and issue new legally permissible tariffs,” he said.

The White House did not immediately respond to CNBC’s request for comment.

The increase comes after the Supreme Court ruled in a 6-3 tariff decision on Friday that President Trump had unfairly invoked the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to enforce the tax.

President Trump responded on the same day by using his authority under Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974 to impose 10% tariffs worldwide. The law only allows the president to impose temporary surcharges, and extensions require Congressional approval.

The president harshly criticized the Supreme Court’s ruling in a post on his social media, calling it “ridiculous, ill-conceived, and extremely anti-American.”

He also attacked Justices Neil Gorsuch and Amy Coney Barrett, who ruled for the majority.
