The Supreme Court ruled Monday, effectively banning redrawing the boundaries of New York City’s only congressional district currently held by Republicans for the 2026 midterm elections.
The decision is a victory for incumbent U.S. Rep. Nicole Malliotakis, a Staten Island Republican, who is seeking re-election this November. He had asked the Supreme Court to hear his appeal to block a new line in the election.
The Supreme Court’s decision is potentially important for Republicans, who are trying to maintain slim majorities in both chambers of Congress. Republicans hold a 218-214 majority in the House.

Malliotakis represents New York’s 11th Congressional District, which was redrawn in 2024. The district includes all of Staten Island and parts of south Brooklyn.
Last October, four New York City residents filed a lawsuit challenging the district’s design, arguing that it diluted the votes of Black and Latino residents in violation of the U.S. Constitution.
