President Donald Trump said Tuesday that he does not expect to extend the ceasefire, which expires on Wednesday, but believes the United States “will eventually reach a big deal” with Iran to end weeks of war.
“I don’t think they have a choice,” Trump said in an interview with CNBC’s “Squawk Box” when asked what he expected to achieve in a second round of peace talks with Iran.
“We eliminated their navy, we eliminated their air force, we eliminated their leadership,” the president said.
“Frankly, we got rid of their leaders. It complicates things in some ways, but their leaders are much more reasonable,” Trump said. “Whatever you want to call it, this is regime change. I didn’t set out to do it, but I did it indirectly.”
Asked if he would extend the ceasefire to allow time for peace negotiations to reach an agreement to end the war, Trump said: “Well, I don’t want to do that.”
