After negotiations in Washington, Lebanon and Israel agreed to implement a ceasefire, according to a joint statement with the United States released by the State Department on Wednesday.
The ceasefire is conditional on a complete cessation of firing by the Iran-allied Hezbollah militia and the withdrawal of all operatives from the southern Litani area, the statement said. The two countries agreed to a ceasefire last month, but hostilities remain.
Israel invaded Lebanon in March in pursuit of Hezbollah, which supported Tehran and fired across the border.
Iran has said it will not agree to a deal to end the conflict with the United States and Israel that began in late February unless a ceasefire also applies to Lebanon.
Lebanon and Israel agreed to further direct negotiations to build trust and resolve other outstanding issues, Wednesday’s statement said.
