US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that a deal to end the Iran war could be reached within “a few days” and that the vital Strait of Hormuz would reopen “immediately” after the deal.

President Trump told reporters after attending the NBA Finals in New York that the two countries are in the final stages of a “very, very good agreement that does not allow for nuclear weapons in any way.”

A fragile ceasefire in the Middle East frayed over the weekend as Iran and Israel exchanged attacks for the first time since it took effect in mid-April.

The Islamic Republic fired missiles into northern Israel after accusing Jerusalem of violating a cease-fire agreement with attacks on Lebanon, including Sunday’s attack on Beirut’s southern suburbs. Israel announced in response that it had launched a “massive attack on strategic defense systems.”

Iran’s military later announced it had halted attacks on Israel, but Tehran’s Foreign Ministry told CNBC that it would resume hostilities if the IDF continued its attack on Lebanon.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the war against Iran and its Lebanon-based Hezbollah proxy is “not over yet,” insisting that both are weaker than ever.

President Trump previously promised a quick resolution to the conflict, only for fighting to resume later. He initially said the fighting would last four to six weeks. It passed 100 days on Sunday.

President Trump told reporters that the pilot of the U.S. Apache helicopter that crashed near the Strait of Hormuz on Monday was “fine.”

“There were no injuries,” he said, adding that the government would release a report on Tuesday. The cause is unknown.

On Monday, before the Israeli-Iranian conflict escalated, President Trump posted on Truth Social that negotiations were “still in progress, but ignorance and stupidity could get in the way.”

It added that the US blockade of Iranian ports in the Gulf of Oman would not be lifted “until a ‘final agreement’ is reached.”
