The United States launched a “series of powerful strikes” against Iran on Tuesday in retaliation for Iranian attacks on three commercial ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz, U.S. Central Command said.
A new U.S. attack could reignite conflict in the region and raise concerns that the Strait of Hormuz will be closed again. Oil prices rose dramatically during the US-Iran conflict, causing inflation around the world.
The attack comes after the United States and Iran traded blows last month following similar attacks by Iran on commercial ships in the strait, one of the world’s most important chokepoints, which Iran has blocked for months this year. While negotiations to end the war are ongoing and the status of the ceasefire remains uncertain, the two countries agreed to a ceasefire within days of the exchange last month.
