President Donald Trump said Friday he will not sign the bipartisan housing bill that Congress passed last month, protesting Republicans’ failure to pass a controversial election bill.
But the housing affordability bill, dubbed the “Pathway to 21st Century Housing Act,” is scheduled to automatically become law on Saturday unless President Trump vetoes it.
When asked if President Trump would veto the bill, the White House referred CNBC to the president’s Truth Social post and said the president would not sign the bill.
President Trump is urging his Republican allies to make the election bill, known as the SAVE America Act, a top legislative priority ahead of November’s midterm elections in which Democrats hope to take back at least one House. Among other provisions, the bill aims to curtail noncitizen voting in U.S. elections, even though it is already illegal by the federal government and rarely occurs.
President Trump has previously indicated he would refuse to sign any other legislation until the election law is passed, and last month he abruptly canceled the signing ceremony for a housing bill due to those concerns.
