The United States and China are set to hold talks on artificial intelligence in September, five sources familiar with the matter told Reuters, as the two countries face how to regulate risks posed by rivals’ increasingly powerful frontier models.

The AI talks, a key outcome of May’s summit between President Trump and Xi Jinping, are likely to be held before Chinese President Xi Jinping’s scheduled visit to the United States on Sept. 24, although a date has not yet been finalized, the people said, asking not to be identified as the information is private.

The talks will be led by U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, four people familiar with the matter said. The identities of the other U.S. and Chinese participants, as well as the topic and location of the talks, are still being considered as preparations are in the early stages, the three people said.

The White House, State Department, and Treasury Department did not respond to Reuters’ requests for comment. China’s National Development and Reform Commission, cyberspace regulator, Ministry of Industry, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and State Council did not immediately respond to faxed requests for comment.
