President Donald Trump said he is “not trying to bring Iran to the negotiating table” after the US military completed a new attack on the Middle Eastern country on Tuesday.
In posts on Truth Social, President Trump reiterated that the United States has “almost complete control” of the Strait of Hormuz, adding that Iran’s economy is collapsing.
He said Iran was “just playing out the inevitable” and asked: “When will the Iranian people stand up and fight?”
In a post on X, U.S. Central Command said it attacked Iran’s air defense and communications facilities and radar systems in retaliation for the country’s “recent attempted attacks” on commercial ships and U.S. military personnel in the Strait of Hormuz.
The Iranian government responded to the US attack targeting US ally Jordan. The country’s military said it was the target of a missile attack from Iranian territory.
A Jordanian military spokesperson told X that 10 of the 13 missiles were intercepted by the country’s air defense system and three landed in remote areas. No injuries or deaths were reported.
Bahrain’s Interior Ministry also issued a “Potential Threat Alert” early Wednesday local time, urging citizens to head to the nearest safe location. The nature of the threat was not immediately clear.
Oil prices continued to rise in Asian trading on Wednesday after the strike, with international benchmark Brent crude futures rising 4.5% to $94.52 per barrel on Tuesday, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate futures rose about 5% to $90.03 per barrel, the highest level since July 24.
Trump earlier called the U.S. attack “massive and powerful” and threatened further military action if Iran retaliated against what he called a “very legitimate attack.”
Iranian forces attacked a US military base in Jordan on Monday, following a rocket launcher attack by US forces on Iran’s Larak island the day before. The U.S. government claimed that the launcher was preparing to fire a mine-laden rocket into the strait.
Sunday’s airstrikes were the first time in about a month that the United States and Iran have exchanged attacks and came after the Trump administration announced it would launch an “economic D-day” against Iran’s backers.
