President Donald Trump said Monday that Ukraine and Russia have agreed to stop attacking each other’s energy infrastructure.

“Ukraine agreed not to meet Russia’s energy goals. Russia agreed to meet them as well!” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social.

He also said that “the rise in global diesel prices is primarily caused by the Russia-Ukraine war, not Iran.”

Neither Ukraine nor Russia immediately recognized President Trump’s claims.

The announcement came a day after President Trump asked Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy to “stop diesel fuel supplies in Russia.”

“Let him pursue his goals, but let’s stop him from diesel fuel, because he’s causing the diesel shortage,” Trump said during a visit to Ireland.

The Russian government welcomed President Trump’s comments.

But Ukraine has maintained that the energy facilities are legitimate military targets as it continues to resist Russian forces that invaded the country more than four years ago.

President Zelenskyy said on Thursday that Ukraine had attacked two Russian oil refineries. He also said the Russian government was using oil revenues to “finance wars and the murder of Ukrainians.”

The average U.S. price for diesel, a key energy source for industrial and other large machinery, hit $6 a gallon for the first time Friday.

The sharp price hike coincides with an escalation in the Iran war, including recent drone attacks on Saudi Arabia’s vital East-West oil pipeline.

This pipeline was used to bypass the Strait of Hormuz. The Strait of Hormuz is a key oil shipping route and commercial traffic has remained severely restricted since the US and Israel attacked Iran in late February.
