MS NOW journalists were denied access to the White House grounds early Saturday morning, a day after President Donald Trump announced he would ban MS NOW, CNN and Politico from reporting on him.
“Early this morning, MS NOW reporters were denied access to the White House grounds,” MSN said in a statement. “The White House belongs to the American people, and the decisions made within it are funded by our tax dollars. MS NOW will take whatever steps necessary to protect our First Amendment rights and the vital role of independent journalism in our democracy.”
MS NOW “will continue to report on issues affecting the president, his administration and the American people.”
On Friday, President Trump said in a post on Truth Social that these news organizations should not “constantly write or report fiction and lies when reporting on the President of the United States, the Trump Administration, or the United States of America.”
“Other fake news outlets will likely follow suit,” he added.
Later that day in the Oval Office, the president said he was imposing the ban in response to “cumulative reporting” by three news organizations.
“It’s disgusting,” he said.
In 2018, the Trump White House tried to suspend a CNN reporter’s press pass, and is now facing a lawsuit alleging it tried to bar an Associated Press reporter from certain spaces.
President Trump said Friday that efforts to shut down news organizations are worthwhile even if they don’t hold up in court.
“I think it’s a good thing to point out, whether it’s here to stay or not,” Trump said.
