President Donald Trump is scheduled to meet with New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani on Monday ahead of the upcoming United Nations General Assembly, the mayor’s office confirmed to CNBC on Sunday.
The mayor’s press office said the meeting will be held at Gracie Mansion and will “focus on issues affecting New York City and New Yorkers.”
Mamdani, a 34-year-old democratic socialist, rose to national prominence after winning the 2025 New York mayoral election. Monday’s meeting will be the latest tête-à-tête between the two political rivals, as he has emerged as a top leader amid a shift to the left in the Democratic Party.
President Trump’s Republican Party has made Mamdani the center of a messaging offensive ahead of November’s midterm elections, with Republicans trying to paint Democrats as “communists.” Opinion polls show a sharp increase in support for Democrats in the run-up to the midterm elections, and there is a risk that Republicans will lose their majorities in both houses of Congress.
Mr. Trump himself has maintained an unusually friendly relationship with Mr. Mamdani, who he actively campaigned against during the mayoral race, despite attempts by his own party to attack him. The president, a native New Yorker, has twice invited Mamdani to the White House for surprisingly friendly talks.
