Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton has been chosen as the Trump administration’s new AI czar to lead the response to artificial intelligence amid growing concerns about the risks of rapidly evolving technology, The Wall Street Journal reported on Saturday.
Creighton told the magazine that he would lead a new White House task force. The task force said it will study and report on the risks and opportunities of AI within 120 days and make recommendations about the federal government’s responsibilities regarding the new technology.
“The president asked us to form a group to ensure that we continue to be leaders in the superintelligence field and do exactly what he has said: to put the interests of the American people first,” Creighton said, the newspaper reported.
The organization will be called the “Super Intelligence Force” (SI), a term that President Donald Trump prefers over AI, and will effectively make Creighton the new AI czar, the newspaper reported, citing a senior White House official.
The White House did not immediately respond to CNBC’s request for comment.
In September, President Trump announced in a post on Truth Social that he would create a new “AI Corps” to promote the industry and root out bad actors.
“We will never inhibit or stifle the growth of this great industry. Rather, we will cherish it, help it, and watch it grow.” Trump said in the post that he also announced plans to hire an AI czar.
“Only those with high IQ should apply!” the president added.
