Sen. Chris Murphy suffered a stroke over the weekend and remained hospitalized Tuesday, his office confirmed.

“He continues to grow and is encouraged by the outpouring of well wishes,” Josh Sorbet, Murphy’s communications director, told CNBC in an emailed statement. “He is voting early in Connecticut and encourages everyone to make their voices heard by voting and sending a message in this crucial election today.”

Asked about his condition and prospects for recovery, his office provided no further details.

The Senate is scheduled to reconvene on Monday following Tuesday’s midterm elections.

Murphy’s chief of staff, Alison Hurwitt, said in a statement Sunday that Murphy began experiencing symptoms of a stroke while attending his son’s hockey game on Saturday.

“He was taken to a local hospital where it was determined that he had suffered a stroke. He was transferred to Johns Hopkins University for further monitoring and is responding well to treatment,” Harwit said.

Mr Hurwitt said at the time that Mr Murphy was “awake and alert”.

Johns Hopkins Hospital’s main campus is in Baltimore, but it also has other locations in and around Washington.

Murphy is not running for re-election on Tuesday, but he has traveled extensively this fall to support Democratic candidates. Murphy entered the Senate in 2013 after serving six years in the House of Representatives. He is also considered a likely presidential candidate in 2028.
