Liverpool manager Arne Slott feels guilty about his team’s “ridiculous” and “unbelievable” poor performance this season.

The reigning Premier League champions suffered a 3-0 home defeat to Nottingham Forest on Saturday, their sixth defeat in seven league games, and are now 11th in the table, dropping to the bottom of the table for the first time in more than a decade. They then dropped to 12th following Merseyside rivals Everton’s win over Man United in the MNF.

Ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League home game against PSV Eindhoven, Slott spoke about their dismal form:

Jamie Carragher and Portugal manager Roberto Martinez give tactical analysis of Liverpool’s poor form

“That wasn’t the case at any club I was going to work for, let alone Liverpool. It’s unbelievable.

“If an excuse could be found, it would never be good enough for a performance like this. It was unexpected for the club, for me and for everyone.

“But at the club I work for, if you have to face it, this is the best club to face it. The more difficult it gets at a club like this, the more we come together to achieve what Liverpool usually achieve.”

Last season, Liverpool were chasing the Premier League title despite conceding 41 goals. They have already scored 20 goals in the opening 12 games this season.

Jamie Carragher considers the issues facing Arne Slott but says only Liverpool’s head coach can solve them

“We have conceded far more goals than last season. For a club like us, the number of goals we concede and the number of goals from set-pieces is almost ridiculous.”

“The biggest thing is the goals we conceded. From our open plays, we have been able to create enough chances to get results.”

He added, “I feel responsible and guilty.”

Liverpool have lost eight of their last 11 games in all competitions, with Saturday’s 3-0 home loss to Forest equaling their worst Premier League defeat at Anfield.

When asked what the team can learn from the loss in preparation for the next game, Slott said: “It’s hard to say at this point.

Gary Neville admits he was stunned by Liverpool’s home defeat to Nottingham Forest

“I have said many times that there are things we can do better, but it doesn’t help and it didn’t help.

“There can be many reasons why we lost. From our point of view at Liverpool Football Club, that is unacceptable.

“This is an undesirable situation. It’s time to start winning games again, but we have to do a lot to win games.

“We have to do the simple things better. That’s what we don’t do and it’s very easy to solve. Simple football is the most difficult thing.”
