Burnley missed some big chances in their 0-0 draw with Everton, but they could have picked up three valuable points.
The Clarets took 16 shots, but none went on target. Although we played well in the build-up, we were unable to find the back of the net due to poor finishing and a combination of misfortunes.
No team this season has scored more goals after the 85th minute than Burnley, so it was perhaps unsurprising that Burnley came closest to scoring within the 90 minutes.
Jadon Anthony found Jeanne Fleming on the right and the latter fired a shot past the oncoming Jordan Pickford. The shot hit the right post, crossed the front of the goal, and went out of bounds. An offside flag had been raised – perhaps saving Fleming’s skin – but replays made it look like a harsh call.
Jacob Bruun-Larsen also should have put Burnley ahead just before the hour. Marcus Edwards scooped the ball forward for his teammate, but the ball went just over the crossbar.
Armando Broja scored a goal against Bournemouth and started, but he was also guilty of missing chances.
Everton, on the other hand, gave little in return, missing key scorers such as Jack Grealish (illness), Ilman Ndiaye, Idrissa Gueye (AFCON) and Keenan Dewsbury-Hall (injured).
Charlie Alcaraz had the first shot on target of the match, but his header went straight to Martin Dubravka. Even early in the first half, Beto should have converted a wicked cross from Tyler Dibling.
Alcaraz made a nice attack after the break, but his overhead kick hit the goalkeeper again. Dubravka continued to make smart saves, denying Beto and Tierno Barry a clean sheet.
This result also doesn’t help much in the Premier League standings. Burnley still maintain a six-point lead, but have now suffered back-to-back draws after losing seven games in a row. Everton have dropped one place to 11th, but are just four points away from qualifying for the Champions League.
Parker: We deserved the three points.
Burnley head coach Scott Parker told Sky Sports on whether they missed a chance to take the three points: “I think maybe so. We totally deserved the three points today. We got some real quality and worked hard on our game.”
“We missed some big chances… there’s probably a bit of frustration as well.
“On the other hand, it was a very good performance overall. We got one point and a clean sheet, so it’s definitely a step forward for us.”
“You try to get into those positions, but it depends on the specific quality…The good thing is we were in those positions.
“I saw the team full of effort, but in certain moments it wasn’t easy. Of course, it’s not as smooth as it has been. There were certainly positives from today.”
“These are tough times for us. This is a young team, we’ve lost seven on the bounce and we’ve seen a lot of teams wilt from a lack of belief, energy and enthusiasm.
“We didn’t see anything like that with today’s group and that’s very pleasing. It was a close call today that we didn’t take our chances, but we need to keep it up and keep moving forward.”

Moyes: “We didn’t play well enough to win”
Everton manager David Moyes told Sky Sports: “It wasn’t a particularly good game, but sometimes you concede points when you don’t play well and today we didn’t play well enough to get more points.”
“We always try to get things right, but I don’t think Burnley were an easy team to beat here at Turf Moor. They got a good result against Bournemouth last week so we went into the game with a bit more confidence.
“We couldn’t get out of the blocks from the start. It’s not like we didn’t have a lot of chances to score, but our goalkeeper made some saves. We had one or two chances, but in the end we conceded too many goals today and didn’t play well enough.”
“I didn’t think Burnley had many chances. We had a few more chances in the second half, but in the first half there were very few chances for either team.”
Regarding the current composition of the lightweight squad, he said: “We are managing it, but that is part of the job. Sometimes in management you have to find a way to get results and win games with the players available. We didn’t win today, but I hope we get a good point in the end.”
