The trial of the driver involved in the fatal crash that injured Anthony Joshua and killed two members of his team has been postponed until next month.

Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, 46, is charged with four counts of causing death by dangerous driving, reckless and negligent driving, driving without due care and attention and operating a vehicle without a valid domestic driving licence.

Kayode appeared at the Sagamu Magistrate’s Court in Ogun State, southwestern Nigeria, on Tuesday, and after an initial hearing, the case was adjourned until February 25 at the request of prosecutors.

Joshua’s personal trainer Latif Ayodele and strength coach Sheena Gami were killed on December 29 when the Lexus SUV they were riding in, driven by Kayode, collided with a parked truck near Lagos.

Heavyweight boxer Fabio Wardley says Anthony Joshua needs time to recover and decide whether to box again after his tragic car accident in Nigeria.

The former world heavyweight champion was treated for his injuries in hospital and was released on New Year’s Eve, returning to London ahead of Gami and Ayodele’s memorial service on January 4.

Mr Kayode was granted bail of 5 million naira (£2,578) at the beginning of the case and remanded until bail conditions were met. He did not speak during the hearing.

Boxing reporter Andy Scott said there was an “outpouring of love” and support for those involved in the car crash that injured Anthony Joshua and tragically claimed the lives of his friends Sheena Gami and Latif Ayodele.

Joshua, who is of Nigerian descent, had been in Nigeria since his knockout win over Jake Paul in Miami on December 17th.

He shared footage of himself hitting the pads with a trainer online on Thursday, posting it on Instagram with the caption “Mental Strengthening Therapy.”

AJ “takes time” to think about the future

Promoter Eddie Hearn insisted that Joshua was the “sole voice” to make decisions about his future and possible return to professional boxing.

Asked if he expected Joshua to take some time off from boxing, Hearn told Sky Sports News: “Yes, I think so. I don’t think it’s a conversation that anyone would be comfortable having in terms of asking what could happen next and what he’s thinking.”

Promoter Eddie Hearn says Anthony Joshua needs some time away from boxing before deciding on his future

“It’s what has to come next. Like I said, in order to get through not just a horrible event, but something that life can never prepare you for, you need someone to take time and just be with you. You never want to run into people you know in any type of situation.

“It’s heartbreaking. And I believe when the time comes, he’ll make a decision. You’re going to hear it from him. The future of Anthony Joshua will be told by Anthony Joshua. And in that respect, that’s the only voice you need to hear.”

“And we give him time to make that decision and specifically heal in different ways.”
