Manager Thomas Tuchel has signed a contract extension that will keep him as England manager until the end of Euro 2028.

The FA announced on Thursday that the German would stay, with his previous contract running until the end of this summer’s World Cup.

Manager Tuchel said: “I am very happy and proud to be able to extend my stay in England.

“It’s no secret that I’ve loved every minute of working with the players and coaches and I can’t wait to take them to the World Cup.

“This is a great opportunity and I will do everything I can to make this country proud.”

New contract provides ‘clarity and complete focus’

The timing of Tuchel’s extension is interesting given that clubs, including Manchester United, could be looking for a new manager in the summer.

The FA said the agreement with Tuchel, who has been linked with a managerial role at Old Trafford, would provide “clarity and full focus” ahead of the World Cup and hoped it would silence talk surrounding his future, which could be a distraction if no extension is granted.

The FA announced that Tuchel’s main backroom team – Anthony Barry, Enrique Hilario, Nico Mayer and James Melbourne – have also agreed to contract extensions until the end of Euro 2028.

Tuchel added: “I’ve had tremendous support from[FA chief executive]Mark[Bringham]all my colleagues at the FA and the fans everywhere I go, so I didn’t hesitate when I was asked to continue with this dream job.”

“Euro 2028 is going to be a very special tournament and as a manager there is nothing I want more than to compete against the best players on the biggest stage possible.”

FA CEO Mark Bullingham added: “We are delighted that Thomas will be with us until Euro 2028. He was the right man for the job when he joined us for our World Cup campaign and has only strengthened his reputation through qualifying. We know the players are right behind him and the unity within the group is something everyone can see.”

“There is no better candidate in world football. With his experience, knowledge and passion for the big game, he gives our team the best chance of success, as we host the once-in-a-generation Euros this summer and in two years’ time.”

“Thomas, Anthony and the wider team have the perfect blend of English coaching and international expertise. They remain committed to achieving the best possible results this summer and securing them early for 2028 has removed any potential confusion in contract renegotiations during the tournament.”

Could Tuchel add a second star to England’s kit?

Tuchel, who is scheduled to attend the Nations League draw in Brussels on Thursday, has been confirmed as Gareth Southgate’s successor in October 2024.

The focus will now be on this summer’s North American World Cup.

In his first interview, he said his aim was to add a “second star” to England’s shirt by winning the 2026 North American World Cup.

His England team qualified, winning all eight games in a group that included Albania, Serbia, Latvia and Andorra.

As part of their preparation camp in South Florida, England will play New Zealand on Saturday 6 June, before facing Costa Rica on Wednesday 10 June, the day before the tournament’s opening match.

England then begin their group stage campaign against Croatia on Wednesday 17 June, before facing Ghana and Panama in other group games later in June.
