Ireland made substitutions and came from behind to beat Italy 20-13 in the second leg of the Six Nations, avoiding their first defeat against the Azzurri in Dublin.

A try from Italian hooker Giacomo Nicotera and a strike from Paolo Garbisi (one penalty, one conversion) gave Ireland a positive second half after a dismal first half that saw them trailing 10-5 at half-time.

A try from Jamie Osborne in the first half was followed by goals from Jack Conan and Robert Balcoon in the second half to take the lead. The latter goal came after Jack Crowley, Jamison Gibson-Park and Tajig Beirne made notable impacts.

Italy cut the gap to seven points through Garbisi’s shot, and with four minutes left Menensero had a great chance to equalize, but Ireland knocked it on after an awkward bounce off the post.

What’s next?

Ireland next face England in the third leg of the Six Nations at the Allianz Stadium, Twickenham, on Saturday 21st February (kick-off 2.10pm).

Italy travel to face France at the Stade Pierre Mauroy in Lille on Sunday 22 February (kick-off 3.10pm) in their third Six Nations fixture.
