Michael van Gerwen is in doubt whether he will take part in Thursday night’s Premier League Darts in Glasgow (live on Sky Sports) due to a “medical issue”.

League leader Van Gerwen will take on world champion Luke Littler in Scotland.

The Dutchman boasted a three-point lead at the top of the Premier League in back-to-back appearances in the nightly finals for the start of the 2026 season, but lost 6-3 to the intimidating Gerwyn Price in Antwerp last week.

PDC said in a statement: “Michael has a medical issue and is awaiting test results to determine whether he is able to travel to Glasgow.”

Tournament rules state that if a player is forced to withdraw on a Premier League night, their quarter-final opponents will immediately advance to the semi-finals on a bye.

If Van Gerwen withdraws, Littler will face Johnny Clayton or Price in the semi-finals.

The news came after van Gerwen’s close friend Vincent van der Voort revealed the three-time world champion was taking antibiotics because he had “picked up something”.

“Unfortunately, we don’t know yet whether Michael will play or not,” Van der Voort said on the Darts Drate Door podcast.

“He seems to have picked something up and is on antibiotics. I can’t say he’s arrived yet. We’ll have to wait and see over the next few days.”

“Tests are being carried out and we hope it will be caught and resolved soon. It is possible that he may not be at the scene.

“Everything is uncertain right now. Every time you think you’re moving in the right direction, something else happens.”

Van Gerwen missed Berlin during last year’s tournament due to a shoulder injury.

Who will win this year’s Premier League Darts? Luke Humphries will defend his title and you can watch the match every Thursday on Sky Sports from February to May. Stream darts and other top sports now.
