Rangers say the racist abuse directed at Jadie Gassama and Emmanuel Fernandes is “unacceptable”.

After Sunday’s draw against Livingston, the pair sent messages on their Instagram accounts and the club reported the comments to Meta and Police Scotland.

In a statement, the Ibrox club said its “immediate priority is the health of the players involved” and that it was in direct contact with Gassama and Fernandes.

They added that they were “proud” of the players “standing up for themselves by highlighting this vile abuse.”

Meanwhile, the SPFL called the comments “disgraceful” and added that along with Rangers they “wholeheartedly condemn this appalling and vile online racist abuse”.

In a statement, the SPFL added: “We fully support the steps taken by the authorities to identify those involved and encourage anyone with information about these incidents to contact Police Scotland.”

Full statement from Rangers

“After yesterday’s game, Jady Gassama and Emmanuel Fernandez received racist abuse on their Instagram accounts.

“It is completely unacceptable for any player to open their phone and see abuse related to the color of their skin.

“The contents have been reported to Meta and will be reported to Police Scotland.

Fernandes scored a goal in Rangers’ draw with Livingstone

“The account appears to be anonymous and has no connection to the club. This may make it difficult to take action, but it does not diminish the seriousness of what happened or the responsibility of the platforms involved.”

“Our immediate priority is the well-being of the players involved. We are in direct contact with Jaydee and Manny and are providing our full support through the current and future judicial process.”

“I am proud that they stood up for themselves last night to highlight this despicable abuse.

“Manny and Jaydee represent Rangers with dedication and pride. Every time they step on the pitch, they do so on behalf of this club and our fans.”

“Many supporters have already sent messages of support and we welcome that support.

“It reflects what this club stands for: pride in the shirt, respect for those who wear it and a determination to come together.”
