Ben Stokes: England captain denies falling out with head coach Brendon McCullum, insists differences are healthy Cricket News

Ben Stokes has denied any suggestion that he disagrees with Brendon McCullum, insisting that disagreements are essential to a healthy and successful sporting relationship.

The relationship between England’s captain and head coach has come under forensic scrutiny following the disastrous 4-1 Ashes defeat in Australia, during which their preparation for the tour and unyielding attacking philosophy were heavily criticized.

At times during the ill-fated series there appeared to be a misunderstanding of messages between coach and captain, but Stokes insists they are largely on the same page heading into England’s Test summer.

“When you’re in a leadership position with someone, if they think you’re always going to agree on everything, that’s just not possible,” Stokes said.

“To me, that’s not a healthy environment for the sport. Everyone just agrees with everyone or says yes to the person above them. There has to be a discussion. There has to be a conversation, and then in the end we’ll both get to where we both want to get to.”

“Me and Brendon are similar, but not similar in other areas either. But what we want is to be as successful as possible.

“The way we arrive at success may be the same here and slightly different there, but by having these discussions we always end up in the same place.

ECB managing director Rob Key tells Sky Sports why he thinks Brendon McCullum is the right man to lead England Cricket forward and how he is dealing with the aftermath of last winter’s Ashes defeat.

“We agree 95 percent of the time, but we discuss the 5 percent that differ and ultimately arrive at the direction we want.

“It’s impossible to agree on everything. To say we didn’t see eye to eye is a huge overstatement.”

Stokes and McCullum will be tasked with lifting England off the canvas for this summer’s Test series at home against New Zealand and Pakistan.

In the latest Sky Sports Cricket Podcast, Nasser Hussain and Michael Atherton discuss whether Ben Stokes’ approach to captaincy will change this summer

Stokes expressed hope that the partnership between the two sides will extend beyond the summer and into the end of 2027, saying he hopes to have another chance at redemption for the Ashes by then.

“Given what me and Brendon have been able to accomplish as a group over four years, I couldn’t imagine doing what we’re trying to do with anyone else,” Stokes added.

“We both take a lot of pride in what we do. We put our heart and soul into this job. Brendon has definitely done that over the last four years. Hopefully we’ll be together until the end of 2027 and win what we want to win.”

Ben Stokes insists he continues to share Brendon McCullum’s vision for English cricket

“I am very confident in me and Brendon’s ability to work together because we have been working together for a very long time now, but the way we work together is a little different.

“The important thing for me and Brendon is to come together to win and make this team as good as possible. That’s always been the case since we started. Now that we’ve been together for four years, it might look a little different.”

“We still want to win everything and we still want to give our players the best chance possible.”
