Bryson DeChambeau has missed the final round of LIV Golf Mexico City due to a wrist injury.
DeChambeau, who has two wins at LIV Golf this season, posted back-to-back 71s on Saturday with a 2-over 73 and was 2-over and 16 strokes behind third-round leader Jon Rahm.
“During yesterday’s round, I felt some discomfort in my wrist and decided to withdraw from the final round of LIV Golf Mexico City to prevent further injury,” DeChambeau said in a statement.
“This week didn’t go as well as we had hoped, but we wish the Crushers the best. We will take a few days to get evaluated and prepare for the LIV Golf Virginia match.”
DeChambeau won the LIV Golf Tournament in Singapore and South Africa this season ahead of the Masters, but after shooting a 76 in the opening round, he missed the cut with a triple bogey on the final hole in the second round with a 74.
DeChambeau was replaced in the Crushers GC lineup for the final round by Mexico’s Luis Carrera, with Rahm ahead of Ryder Cup teammate Tyrrell Hatton by two points and Tom McKibbin by three points.
DeChambeau’s withdrawal from the tournament comes a week after the LIV Golf League came under intense scrutiny following reports that the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) plans to cut off financial support for the circuit.
LIV chief executive Scott O’Neill was quoted as saying the league was “funded through the season” and would then “work like crazy” to continue, but team captain Sergio Garcia declined to comment suggesting it would be funded until 2030.
“This is not the way the world works. We have a commitment to continue this,” O’Neill told TNT Sports.
“The reality is that you’re funded for a season and then you work like a business like crazy to create a business and a business plan to stay in business. But it’s no different than any other private equity-funded business in human history.”
Earlier this week, O’Neal wrote a letter to LIV staff saying the season “will continue at full throttle as planned, uninterrupted,” without making any mention of what happens beyond this season.
As of April 19, PIF has not yet commented on the future of LIV Golf.
LIV Golf on Sunday announced plans to return to Club de Golf Chapultepec for the 2027 LIV Golf Mexico City, continuing its multi-year commitment to the region.
What’s next?
The next LIV Golf League event will be LIV Golf Virginia, scheduled for May 7-10 at Trump National Golf Club in Washington, DC.
DeChambeau will also be playing at the PGA Championship a week later, which will be broadcast live on Sky Sports. Get and stream Sky Sports without a contract.
