Emma Raducanu has withdrawn from next week’s Madrid Open as she continues to fully recover.

The British number one also missed WTA Tour events in Miami and Linz to prioritize rehabilitation from symptoms following a viral infection she contracted in Romania in early February.

Raducanu, who opted to sit out England’s Billie Jean King Cup qualifier against Australia, is expected to return to training and hope to play in Rome in early May.

The 23-year-old last played on March 8, losing to Amanda Anisimova 6-1, 6-1 in the third round in Indian Wells.

In a subsequent speech, Raducanu admitted that she felt a lack of power contributed to her understatement.

“I obviously need to be aggressive when playing against those players, but I think I still have a long way to go to do that. I need to play to my strengths and maybe mix it up a little bit more,” she said.

Since parting ways with his latest coach, Francisco Roig, in January, the 2021 US Open champion has been working privately with Mark Petchey to get back into shape.

Raducanu’s next appearance on clay will be at the Italian Open, which begins in Rome on May 5th. This will be followed by tournaments in Strasbourg and Rabat before the French Open.

She becomes the latest high-profile player to withdraw in Madrid, with Carlos Alcaraz, Novak Djokovic, Taylor Fritz, Sonaj Kartal and Barbora Krejcikova also withdrawing.
