Victor Wembaneyama, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Nikola Jokic are the finalists for this year’s NBA Most Valuable Player (MVP) award.
This means that MVP will be the international MVP for the eighth year in a row.
Current NBA MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander of Oklahoma City is aiming for his fourth consecutive award, and Jokic is aiming for his fourth award. Wembaneyama has also been nominated for the Defensive Player of the Year award and is hoping to win his first MVP award.
The NBA’s international MVP streak began in 2019 and 2020 with Milwaukee’s Giannis Antetokounmpo, who is of Greek and Nigerian descent.
Serbian Jokic won the award in 2021, 2022 and 2024. Philadelphia’s Joel Embiid, a Cameroon-born American citizen, won the award in 2023, and Canada’s Gilgeous-Alexander won the award last year.
Young star Wenban Yama made his playoff debut as the Spurs defeated the Portland Trail Blazers 111-98 in Game 1, scoring 35 points on Sunday night, setting a San Antonio franchise record for most points in a playoff debut.
