Jim Furyk has been named Team USA captain for the 2027 Ryder Cup to be held at Adare Manor, Ireland.
The 55-year-old becomes one of only four American captains to lead the European team more than once since 1979, when it was founded as a team.
Tiger Woods was the front-runner to succeed Keegan Bradley as team captain for the 2027 World Cup, but he has chosen to resign out of consideration following his decision to take a break from golf following a car accident in March.
As the U.S. team tries to bounce back from back-to-back losses in Rome and New York, the PGA of America turned to Furyk, who has plenty of experience playing in the tournament and serving as a captain.
Furyk has been on every U.S. Ryder Cup team for the past 30 years and was captain of the team at the 2018 Ryder Cup at Le Golf National in Paris, where the team lost 17.5 to 10.5 to a European opponent.
“It is a great honor to have the opportunity to captain the U.S. Ryder Cup team for the second time,” Furyk said in making the announcement. “I am deeply grateful to the PGA of America Ryder Cup Committee for entrusting me to lead the team to the 46th Ryder Cup.
“My passion for the Ryder Cup and my dedication to Team USA has never been stronger. Having previously served as team captain, I understand the responsibility and immense pride that comes with this role.
“I’m looking forward to building on that experience and introducing some new ideas as we prepare for 2027. We’re fully committed to putting our players in the best position for success as we strive to regain the Cup on European soil.”
Furyk made his debut as a player in 1997 and participated in nine consecutive tournaments until 2014, with two teams winning and seven losing.
The 2003 U.S. Open champion also served as co-captain in 2016, 2021, 2023 and 2025.
Furyk previously revealed why he enjoyed participating in the Ryder Cup as captain of the U.S. team.
“At the end of the day, I loved being the captain and I loved being the co-captain as well, because you just got to be so involved and watch a lot of golf,” Furyk told CBS Sports in 2023.
“I was pulling hard for those two (captain and vice-captain), but in the end it was my job to go back to the captain and tell him what I’m seeing here: ‘Who’s playing well, who’s not playing well, who would be better suited to this format, that format’.”
“I loved that part of it. I think any captain would be surprised at how little golf they actually saw that week. I knew that and was preparing for it, but I was still shocked to see so little golf at the end of the week in Paris.”
“The PGA of America is left with few options.”
Sky Sports golf correspondent Jamie Weir:
“It’s not a particularly surprising choice. But I don’t think it’s a particularly moving choice either. At best, he’s something of a safe pair.”
“Look, let’s be clear about this. The PGA of America only had one choice for next year’s captain, and that was Tiger Woods. They put all their eggs in the ‘Tiger basket.’ When it became clear that Tiger couldn’t be captain next year, for reasons I don’t need to explain right now, they were thrown into disarray.”
“They were left with the option of going with Webb Simpson, Brant Snedeker, or perhaps a first-time player like Stewart Cink, none of which were particularly exciting choices. They chose Jim Furyk, who has done the job before. He has been on every Ryder Cup team since 1997, appearing as a player for nine consecutive years from 1997 to 2014, and as vice-captain in 2016. Bethpage in 2021, 2023, and last year.
“He was the losing captain in Paris in 2018. Along with Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson, he was kind of the poster child for that generation of American golf. They always went into the Ryder Cup as favorites, but they were always on the losing side. Like I said, he played in nine matches and only won twice.”
“They really didn’t have a choice left, the American PGA, or I should say very little choice. I think this shows that they have a very clear succession plan and are all thinking together, as opposed to the European Ryder Cup teams, where the American PGA is just making it up on a whim.”
“They went from Keegan Bradley back to Jim Furyk, who will be 57 years old by the time next year’s tournament starts. So he doesn’t have that much in common with America’s younger generation of golfers. So after Tiger ruled himself out, they don’t have much of a choice. So again next year Jim Furyk will be facing Luke Donald, who will be looking to win his third straight title.”
